The Kegwa processing station was founded in 1997 and has been a member of the Ngiriambu Cooperative Society since then. Today, Ngiriambu has more than 4,500 registered members who are supported and served by the two washing stations in Kiri and Kegwa. The area is characterized by bimodal precipitation, with a temperature of 10-26 degrees, which is suitable for coffee cultivation. Long-lasting rains can be experienced in March-May, right when the plant is flowering.
Kirinyaga County is located on the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya (5199 m), the country's highest mountain. Given the altitude (1500-1560 masl), the fertile volcanic soil and the tropical climate, Kirinyaga coffee is considered one of the best from Kenya.
The processing method is the classic completely washed process. The pulp of the coffee is removed and dry-fermented for 24 hours before washing. The grains are then dried on raised drying tables, where they are rotated frequently, until the moisture content is reduced to 13%.
