Kunjin is a trademark of Cafe Imports used to describe coffees from smallholders in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Farmers have an average of 1.5 hectares of land, with a maximum of 2,500 coffee trees per hectare. In the global coffee industry, Papua New Guinea is completely unique in the way coffee is harvested and exported from the country. Although there are larger estates and plantations, the majority of coffee production comes from smallholders, each with around 1-2 hectares of land where they grow small amounts.
Most of the coffee in Papua New Guinea is processed by the washed process, and it can be said that due to the very small size of the average farm, it is done in privately or cooperatively owned washing stations. Cherries are typically peeled on the day of harvest and then fermented for 24-48 hours before being washed. Drying is usually done on tarpaulins or raised beds.
