In the early 1800s, Spanish settlers - two brothers, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp and their partner Evaristo Alvarez - settled in Cuba. They created their rum distillery based on their secret recipe and the famous Spanish sherry / brandy production methods. The name Matusalem Rum was born in 1872. Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem, i.e. older than Methuselah, a reference to the making and aging of the rum. Even the conflicts of history could not shake the brand. It survived the strife of independent Cuba, and drew strength from the American liquor ban, i.e. the Golden Age of Cocktails. In 1956, an era came to an end, and the family was forced into exile. We had to wait until 1997, when Dr. Claudio Alvarez, the founder's great-grandson, resurrected the legendary brand. According to the current setup, the company headquarters is in Miami, the production and bottling of the rum takes place in Santiago and the Dominican Republic, where the soil, the climate and the quality of the sugar cane combined with the family recipe guarantee the original quality.
