Pail of Pakistani crystal salt - light pink.
Pakistani Crystal Salt is one of the world's best known and most popular natural salts. Its red colour is due to the iron oxide content in the natural salt. It is mined in large salt mines in the Salt Hills, a central mountain range in the Punjab province of Pakistan, some 200 kilometres southwest of the Himalayas proper.
The area is one of the largest rock salt deposits in the world. Legend has it that the vast salt deposit was discovered by horses in Alexander the Great's army. Pakistan's crystal salt is considered a gift of nature. It is an excellent table salt for everyday kitchen use. Its attractive appearance and mild, unmistakable flavour is what makes this treasure of nature so popular as table salt.
