Today it is impossible to talk about Sauvignon Blanc without mentioning New Zealand. Thanks to the natural and technological features of New Zealand, this wine grape variety now gives the world outstanding quality.
Founded in 1985 by Robert Hill-Smith, a fifth-generation vintner, Nautilus Estate is a small, family-owned winery with all of its grapes sourced from a handful of vineyards in the strikingly beautiful Awatere Valley of Marlborough on New Zealand's South Island. It is one of the few wineries in the area that has remained under the same ownership for more than 3 decades. This time and harmony contributed to an excellent knowledge and understanding of the possibilities offered by the terroir.
From the alluvial floodplains of the Wairau River to the later plantings that make their way up the hills of the South Valley, they have always sought out special vineyards that provide distinctive and exciting flavors over the past thirty years. Differences caused by altitude, exposure and topography, combined with different soils, result in unique growing conditions and thus special wines.
The team combines the most modern facilities with traditional winemaking, the sole purpose of which is to reflect and preserve the harmony of flavors and aromas in the grapes. "We only implement change if we are really, really convinced that it will increase the quality of what we do." said Robert Hill-Smith.
The Nautilus shell on Nautilus Estate wine bottles is a perfect mathematical spiral; beautiful, natural, almost ethereal. This form is found throughout nature: in the growth of the seeds of a sunflower head, in the air movement of a cyclone, or in the spiral through which a hawk flies towards its prey. Balance, harmony and natural beauty inspire the creation of expressive, textured, precisely crafted wines.
